How the European Union flag emoji works
🇪🇺 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇪 (U+1F1EA) and 🇺 (U+1F1FA), which spell EU, the two-letter code for European Union. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.
Why do I see "EU" instead of the flag?
Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇪🇺 shows up as the letters EU. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.
How to type the European Union flag emoji
- iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “European Union”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
- Android: in Gboard, tap the emoji key, then search “European Union” or open the flags tab at the end.
- Mac: press Control + Command + Space and search “European Union”.
