How the Israel flag emoji works
🇮🇱 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇮 (U+1F1EE) and 🇱 (U+1F1F1), which spell IL, the two-letter code for Israel. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.
Why do I see "IL" instead of the flag?
Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇮🇱 shows up as the letters IL. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.
How to type the Israel flag emoji
- iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Israel”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
- Android: in Gboard, tap the emoji key, then search “Israel” or open the flags tab at the end.
