How the Malawi flag emoji works
🇲🇼 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇲 (U+1F1F2) and 🇼 (U+1F1FC), which spell MW, the two-letter code for Malawi. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.
Why do I see "MW" instead of the flag?
Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇲🇼 shows up as the letters MW. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.
How to type the Malawi flag emoji
- iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Malawi”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
