How the Mexico flag emoji works

🇲🇽 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇲 (U+1F1F2) and 🇽 (U+1F1FD), which spell MX, the two-letter code for Mexico. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.

Why do I see "MX" instead of the flag?

Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇲🇽 shows up as the letters MX. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.

How to type the Mexico flag emoji

  • iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Mexico”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
  • Android: in Gboard, tap the emoji key, then search “Mexico” or open the flags tab at the end.
  • Mac: press Control + Command + Space and search “Mexico”.
  • Windows: Windows key + period opens the emoji panel, but it has no country flags. Copy the emoji from this page instead.
