How the Nauru flag emoji works

🇳🇷 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇳 (U+1F1F3) and 🇷 (U+1F1F7), which spell NR, the two-letter code for Nauru. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.

Why do I see "NR" instead of the flag?

Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇳🇷 shows up as the letters NR. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.

How to type the Nauru flag emoji
