How the Scotland flag emoji works
🏴 is a tag sequence: a black flag 🏴 (U+1F3F4) followed by invisible tag characters that spell “gbsct” and an end tag (U+E007F). Apps that support it draw the Scotland flag. Apps that don't show a plain black flag.
Why do I see a black flag instead of the Scotland flag?
Fewer apps support the Scotland flag than country flags. Where it isn't supported, you see the black flag the sequence starts with. The emoji you copied is still correct, and readers on iPhone, Android or Mac usually see the Scotland flag.
How to type the Scotland flag emoji
- iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Scotland”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
- Android: in Gboard, tap the emoji key, then search “Scotland” or open the flags tab at the end.
