🏴 is a tag sequence: a black flag 🏴 (U+1F3F4) followed by invisible tag characters that spell “gbwls” and an end tag (U+E007F). Apps that support it draw the Wales flag. Apps that don't show a plain black flag.
Why do I see a black flag instead of the Wales flag?
Fewer apps support the Wales flag than country flags. Where it isn't supported, you see the black flag the sequence starts with. The emoji you copied is still correct, and readers on iPhone, Android or Mac usually see the Wales flag.
How to type the Wales flag emoji
- iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Wales”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
