Guyana Flag

The green field represents the forests and agricultural land of Guyana. The red triangle symbolizes the zeal and endurance of its people. The golden arrowhead refers to the country's mineral wealth and future potential. White fimbriations symbolize rivers and water resources, and the black border conveys the resilience of the nation.

The flag was selected for independent Guyana at the 1966 independence constitutional conference. Designed by Whitney Smith, it combines Pan-African colors with iconography unique to Guyana’s geology and aspirations. Named 'The Golden Arrowhead,' the flag has become a defining national symbol and was registered with the United Nations at independence.

The flag is composed of a green base with a long golden triangle overlaying a red triangle originating from the hoist. Thin white and black borders separate these shapes, enhancing definition. It follows a 3:5 ratio. The composition creates a bold, forward-moving arrow shape that visually suggests growth and direction.

Guyana’s flag is exhibited on national buildings, schools, and during commemoration events such as Republic Day (23 February) and Independence Day (26 May). It is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, with laws stipulating clean and intact condition. Flags are flown at half-mast during national mourning, and improper use or desecration of the flag is prohibited under national legislation.
