Kazakhstan Flag

The turquoise sky-blue color symbolizes peace, unity, cultural identity, and the endless sky revered by ancient Turkic nomads. The golden sun with grain-shaped rays signifies wealth, abundance, and energy. The soaring eagle represents freedom, power, and aspirations toward the future. The decorative koshkar‑muiz pattern reflects family well-being and traditional Kazakh artistic heritage.

After gaining independence from the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan held a national contest in early 1992 that selected Shaken Niyazbekov’s design. Originally the side ornament was red, but state statute mandated a golden version by mid‑1992 to align with national symbolism. The flag replaced Soviet-era banners on 4 June 1992 and was later codified in law in 1996 and again reaffirmed on Flag Day on 4 June.

A rectangular turquoise field with a central gold sun and eagle; the hoist side features a vertical strip of national ornament in gold. Precise Pantone shades and dimensions are governed by law. The flag’s ratio is officially 1:2. Variants exist for presidential standards, military ensigns, and presidential use.

Kazakhstan celebrates Flag Day annually on 4 June with nationwide ceremonies, academic events, and public flag displays. Displayed at government buildings, embassies, and national celebrations, the flag must be clean and flown from sunrise to sunset. During periods of mourning, it is lowered to half-mast. Disrespectful handling is subject to legal penalty.
