Kiribati Flag

The golden frigate bird represents freedom, authority over the sea, and traditional dance patterns. The rising sun—with 17 rays—symbolises Kiribati’s geographic position on the equator, representing the 16 Gilbert Islands and Banaba. The three white wavy stripes set against a blue field represent the Pacific Ocean and the three archipelagos: Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line Islands.

The flag originates from a badge designed in 1931 by Sir Arthur Grimble for the British colony of Gilbert and Ellice Islands; this was formalised by the College of Arms in 1937. In the lead-up to independence, a national design contest reaffirmed the colonial badge colors and symbols. Despite proposed modifications in scale, locals insisted on the original design. The flag was hoisted officially on 12 July 1979 during independence celebrations.

The upper half is solid red with a gold frigate bird soaring above a sunburst of 17 rays. The lower half comprises three white, wavy horizontal bands on a blue background. The sun and bird fully appear across the width in an armorial banner style matching the colonial coat of arms. The flag’s proportion is 1:2.

Flag usage follows national expectations on ceremonial occasions, national flag day (12 July), government buildings, and schools. Although no separate flag law exists beyond general national identity statutes, tradition ensures the flag is displayed with respect, seldom altered, and replaced when worn. It is widely used during cultural events to signify local pride.
