Liberia Flag

The eleven stripes represent the signers of Liberia’s Declaration of Independence; red stands for valor, and white for moral excellence. The blue canton represents the African continent, and the single white star symbolizes Liberia as the first independent republic in Africa, known as the 'Lone Star State.' The design emphasizes the nation’s American roots and pioneering legacy of freedom.

Established by freed African-American slaves under the auspices of the American Colonization Society, Liberia declared independence on 26 July 1847. A committee of seven women designed and hand-stitched the flag, officially adopted on 24 August 1847. Flag Day later commemorated this milestone. The flag remains virtually unchanged, preserving its origin story and symbolism.

The flag’s 10:19 ratio defines the eleven alternating red and white stripes and the square canton covering the height of the top five stripes. A centered white star sits in the blue canton. Official codes define shades such as Navy Blue and Ruby Red for consistency in usage.

Liberia enshrined flag standards in its constitution and later laws. It is flown at public buildings, during national holidays like Independence Day (26 July) and Flag Day (24 August), and must be properly maintained. Variants include port, garrison, storm, and interment flags of defined sizes. Damaged flags are replaced or respectfully burned. Desecration of the flag is subject to legal penalty.
