Madagascar Flag

White symbolizes purity, peace, and the unifying aspirations of the Malagasy people. Red was historically tied to the Merina monarchy and stands for sovereignty and resistance, while green represents hope, agriculture, and the majority Hova class—the peasant community instrumental in anti-colonial struggle. Together, they reflect ethnic diversity, unity, and national renewal.

Chosen by a national commission following the proclamation of the Malagasy Republic in October 1958, the design replaced colonial-era standards. The flag formally debuted before independence in 1960 and remained unchanged amid political transitions—an enduring emblem from monarchy, through colonial rule, to republican sovereignty.

A vertical white stripe (one‑third width), with horizontal red (top) and green (bottom) stripes filling the remainder. The sharp contrast highlights visual clarity and symbolic depth. Color codes specified in national standards ensure precision in reproduction. The minimalistic layout omits any emblem for maximal recognizability.

Though no distinct flag law exists, national custom dictates that the flag be flown on public buildings, schools, and occasions such as Independence Day (26 June). It must be handled respectfully, replaced when worn, and flown at half‑mast during mourning. When displayed with other flags, proper precedence and maintenance is observed.
