Nicaragua Flag

The two blue bands symbolize the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, or justice and loyalty; the white represents peace and purity. Within the coat of arms, the triangle stands for equality, the five volcanoes reflect unity of the five Central American states, the rising sun and rainbow depict hope, liberty, and a bright future.

Derived from the flag of the United Provinces of Central America, the current design was first flown in 1908 and reaffirmed in 1971. In January 2025, constitutional amendments elevated the Sandinista National Liberation Front flag as an additional national symbol, but the tri‑band remains the primary state emblem.

Three horizontal bands—blue, white, blue—in a 3:5 proportion, with the national coat of arms centered in the white band. Color shades and emblem details are precisely defined in official regulations. One of few sovereign flags to include a shade of purple in its rainbow.

The flag flies at government buildings, embassies, and across the country on civic holidays like Independence Day. It is raised at sunrise, lowered at sunset, maintained in pristine condition, and flown at half-mast during official mourning.
