Senegal Flag

Green symbolizes Islam, hope, and progress; yellow refers to natural wealth and generosity; red stands for sacrifice and the struggle for freedom; the green star symbolizes unity, hope, and the people. The design adopts Pan‑African colors used by Ethiopia and Ghana.

Introduced in 1960 when Senegal left the short-lived Mali Federation, the flag shifted from a federative design to a standalone national banner. The colors and central star underscore sovereignty and Pan‑African connection.

A 2:3 flag with three equal vertical bands (green, yellow, red) with a green five‑pointed star centered in the yellow stripe. Colour standards and dimensions follow national protocols.

Senegal's flag is flown on national holidays like Independence Day, at government buildings, schools, and embassies. It must be kept in good condition, flown sunrise to sunset, at half‑mast during mourning, and treated according to flag law and etiquette.
