How the Hungary flag emoji works
🇭🇺 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇭 (U+1F1ED) and 🇺 (U+1F1FA), which spell HU, the two-letter code for Hungary. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.
Why do I see "HU" instead of the flag?
Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇭🇺 shows up as the letters HU. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.
How to type the Hungary flag emoji
- iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Hungary”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
- Android: in Gboard, tap the emoji key, then search “Hungary” or open the flags tab at the end.
