Hungary Flag

Red symbolizes strength and valor, referencing the bloodshed during uprisings for independence. White stands for faithfulness, purity, and freedom, while green represents hope, fertility, and the nation’s agricultural tradition. Together, they embody resilience, cultural heritage, and the patriotic spirit of the Hungarian people.

The red-white-green tricolor emerged during the 1848 revolution against Habsburg rule and was associated with liberal and nationalist movements. It was used by the revolutionary government, later banned, then re-adopted in various forms through the Austro-Hungarian period. After World War II and the fall of the communist People's Republic, the flag's plain tricolor—without coat of arms—was confirmed as the national flag in May 1957, emphasizing Hungary’s shift toward neutrality and post-war national unity.

A 1:2 proportioned banner with three equal horizontal stripes: top red, middle white, bottom green. Official colors are specified for consistent use, and the flag’s simplicity ensures strong recognizability. Government and military flags may include Hungary’s coat of arms over the center of the white stripe, but the civil flag remains unmarked.

Hungarian flag protocol mandates raising at sunrise and lowering at sunset unless illumination is provided. It is flown at government offices, public landmarks, and private residences during national holidays like State Foundation Day (20 August) and Revolution Memorial Day (15 March). Flags must be maintained in pristine condition—torn or faded flags are respectfully retired. At times of mourning, the flag is lowered to half-mast following a formal announcement from government authorities.
