How the Nigeria flag emoji works

🇳🇬 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇳 (U+1F1F3) and 🇬 (U+1F1EC), which spell NG, the two-letter code for Nigeria. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.

Why do I see "NG" instead of the flag?

Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇳🇬 shows up as the letters NG. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.

How to type the Nigeria flag emoji

  • iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Nigeria”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
  • Android: in Gboard, tap the emoji key, then search “Nigeria” or open the flags tab at the end.
  • Mac: press Control + Command + Space and search “Nigeria”.
  • Windows: Windows key + period opens the emoji panel, but it has no country flags. Copy the emoji from this page instead.
