How the Rwanda flag emoji works

🇷🇼 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇷 (U+1F1F7) and 🇼 (U+1F1FC), which spell RW, the two-letter code for Rwanda. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.

Why do I see "RW" instead of the flag?

Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇷🇼 shows up as the letters RW. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.

How to type the Rwanda flag emoji

  • iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Rwanda”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
  • Android: in Gboard, tap the emoji key, then search “Rwanda” or open the flags tab at the end.
  • Mac: press Control + Command + Space and search “Rwanda”.
  • Windows: Windows key + period opens the emoji panel, but it has no country flags. Copy the emoji from this page instead.
