How the Timor-Leste flag emoji works

🇹🇱 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇹 (U+1F1F9) and 🇱 (U+1F1F1), which spell TL, the two-letter code for Timor-Leste. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.

Why do I see "TL" instead of the flag?

Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇹🇱 shows up as the letters TL. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.
