Lithuania Flag

Yellow stands for the sun, light, and prosperity; green denotes forests, nature, freedom; red reflects courage, blood sacrificed, and national strength—a palette widely interpreted along patriotic and folkloric lines.

Raised on Gediminas’ Tower in 1919 as the symbol of newly reborn Lithuania, the flag was banned during Soviet occupation but reinstated in 1989 as part of the independence movement. Its adoption symbolized national sovereignty and liberation from foreign rule.

Three equal horizontal bands in a 3:5 ratio—yellow at the top, green mid, red bottom. Official dimensions and Pantone colour codes are defined by law. The flag may be displayed vertically: yellow must face heraldic right (left to observer), followed by green and red.

Lithuanian flag law mandates rigorous protocol: flag must be flown 24/7 at government buildings, always prioritized above other flags; it must remain uncontaminated and undamaged; and half‑mast observance or attachment of mourning ribbons is permitted during official bereavements. National flag days include 1 January, 16 February, 11 March, and others commemorating historic events. When displayed with other flags, precedence is strictly observed.
