Moldova Flag

The blue–yellow–red bands echo Romania’s national colors, symbolizing liberty (blue), justice (yellow), and brotherhood (red). The shield’s aurochs head—flanked by a star, rose, and crescent—derives from historic Moldavian heraldry and reflects national sovereignty, ancestral legacy, and cultural continuity.

Adopted upon the restoration of sovereignty in April 1990, just before full independence from the Soviet Union, the tricolor and emblem reconnected Moldova to its 19th-century roots and medieval Moldavian identity. Governmental standards for officials were later defined in 2010 and 2014.

Exact placement and color hues are defined by governmental decrees.

The flag flies at official buildings, government standards, and during national events. Distinct square standards are used by the President, Prime Minister, and Parliament Speaker. Etiquette mandates immaculate condition, sunrise‑to‑sunset display, half‑mast observance during mourning, and proper retirement of worn flags.
