Why 25 May?
Jordan celebrates its Independence Day on 25 May, commemorating the 1946 treaty under which the Emirate of Transjordan ended its status as a British League of Nations mandate and became the fully sovereign Hashemite Kingdom, with Abdullah I proclaimed its first king. The ruling Hashemite dynasty traces its lineage to the Prophet Muhammad and had led the Arab Revolt of 1916 against Ottoman rule. The flag derives directly from the Arab Revolt banner: horizontal black, white and green bands — evoking the Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid caliphates — with a red triangle at the hoist for the Hashemites, bearing a white seven-pointed star said to represent the seven verses of the Quran's opening chapter, al-Fatiha. Independence Day is a national public holiday observed with military parades, a royal address, air-force flypasts and fireworks. It is a central expression of Jordanian identity and of the kingdom's continuity under the Hashemite monarchy.
