How the Russia flag emoji works
🇷🇺 is not a single character. It is two regional indicator letters, 🇷 (U+1F1F7) and 🇺 (U+1F1FA), which spell RU, the two-letter code for Russia. Phones and computers that support flag emojis draw the pair as the flag.
Why do I see "RU" instead of the flag?
Windows does not draw country flag emojis. In Chrome, Edge and most Windows apps, 🇷🇺 shows up as the letters RU. The emoji is still correct: paste it into a message and anyone reading on an iPhone, Android phone or Mac sees the flag, like the image at the top of this page.
How to type the Russia flag emoji
- iPhone and iPad: open the emoji keyboard and search “Russia”, or scroll to the last category, Flags.
- Android: in Gboard, tap the emoji key, then search “Russia” or open the flags tab at the end.
- Mac: press Control + Command + Space and search “Russia”.
