Why 25 February?
Kuwait's National Day is celebrated on 25 February. Although Kuwait gained full independence from Britain on 19 June 1961, the National Day was moved to 25 February — the anniversary of the 1950 accession of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, under whom the country modernised — partly because the original June date fell in the intense summer heat. The day is immediately followed by Liberation Day on 26 February, which marks the end of the Iraqi occupation in 1991, so the two anniversaries form a back-to-back national celebration. The flag, adopted in 1961, uses the Pan-Arab colours: green for the land, white for deeds, red for the swords of defence and black for the defeat of enemies, with a black trapezoid at the hoist. National Day is a public holiday marked by parades, fireworks over Kuwait Bay, playful water and foam street festivities, and vehicles draped in the national colours.
