Flags with Eagles
11 national flags featuring an eagle, with notes on the history and symbolism behind the design.
About Eagles
The eagle is the most frequently used animal in flag heraldry, with a lineage that runs from the legions of Rome through the Holy Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Russian and Habsburg dynasties to the modern republics that inherited their symbolism. Albania carries the double-headed Byzantine eagle on a deep red field, a banner used by the national hero Skanderbeg in the 15th century. Mexico depicts an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent — an image drawn directly from the Aztec founding myth of Tenochtitlan. Egypt’s flag features the Eagle of Saladin, a 12th-century Ayyubid emblem now widely adopted across Arab republican flags. Other eagle flags include Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ecuador, and Zambia. The eagle endures because it combines two nearly universal claims: a state’s right to soar above its rivals, and its watchfulness over its territory.
